Out of Africa

Casillas Xavi

Today team football again after a few weeks of absence. One might think that the relationship between Pique and Shakira is an invention of the media to destabilize Colombia, Spain's rival, but it seems real. We live happy times with the Spanish team the best ever, but not always the case and used to star in the future misfortunes of the Red in major championships. However, at lower levels ruled Spain and the fans wondered why these successes can not be repeated with the elderly.

Among the titles won are particularly memorable Olympics Barcelona 92 with Kiko, Guardiola and company, or the European Under 21 in 1998 when Ivan Perez and Guti were erected in figures of that combined. But no more substance and less remembered was in 1999 when Spanish football won its first World Cup. It was in Nigeria in U 20. Who were those champions and how they developed their careers?

In the African country gathered international players the likes of Ronaldinho with Brazil, English Ashley Cole, Forlan Uruguay or Mexico with Marquez, but the named player of the championship was not one of them but someone not as well known: Seydou Keita, Barcelona player today. It was strange to see a world with the absence of Italy and Germany, but failed to note, but the African teams such as Mali, Ghana and Nigeria offered a great performance. For its part, Brazil and Argentina was fourth, with Cambiasso and Galletti, in eighth. The big surprise was Japan, which is the rival of Spain in the final.

Spanish coach Inaki Saez was, he did a great job at the lower levels of selection but had no luck with the absolute at Euro 2004. During World Aranzubía Nigeria used to be with the goal; Chur and Bermudo on the sides, Jusu and Marchena at the heart of the defense Orbaiz, Xavi and Gabri in midfield, Varela and Barkero in bands and Pablo Couñago tip. The latter would, together with the Malian Dissa, the leading scorer with five goals.

Spain Orbaiz sub20

Spain was the first of the group after beating Brazil and Honduras draw with Zambia. His next victims were the United States in the second round, Ghana, power at lower levels with Ofori Quaye's scoring in the quarter, and Mali in the semifinals where the former Real Madrid Diarra share the midfield with Keita. Japan would be the final opponent as we mentioned. Spain had a peaceful party and the half hour and won by 3-0 with two goals from Paul and one of Barkero. Gabri close the account in the second half.

Of that generation, only Casillas, Xavi and Marchena would race with the selection, the three absolute champions of Europe and the world. It was not the only ones who have become international, as Aranzubía, Gabri and so were Orbaiz albeit testimonial. Orbaiz, with a long history in the Athletic and various injury problems, was captain of that team. Aranzubía was the goalkeeper in front of Casillas, who only played against Honduras and Ghana in the quarter, coincidentally a tie that was decided on penalties, which have dogged the Madrid goalkeeper throughout his career and internationally. The ownership of the Deportivo goal today is due, in addition to their unquestionable quality, which is two years older than Casillas, no little experience in such a young age.

Players such as Varela and Colsa or Yeste, these two substitutes in Nigeria, he built a good track at first. The first was key in the semifinals, scoring two goals. Now playing in the Turkish league (Kasimpasa) after a good scratch at Betis and Mallorca. Yeste, who was summoned once with the absolute without a debut, this summer was seduced by petrodollars to play in UAE (Al Wasl) where today is contained in Bilbao after a career marked by its quality and irregularity. For its part, Colsa remains one basic piece midfield ./><> lrsod racingit> The other owners were not so lucky. Chur, right side, played at first with Celta, Alaves and Compostela but never quite settle. Then began a journey through the Recreation, Aris Thessaloniki, Figueres and Espanyol B. Today in the Honved Hungarian military. The left-back, Bermudo, the quarry Barcelona, came to his first team debut in the Cup and played in the first to Tenerife, where he spent four seasons. Today's player of Sabadell. Jusu, central Tajonar quarry, never made a hole in the defense holds Osasuna, whose first team was several seasons. After passing through several clubs in lower categories, now plays for Egüés, third division.

Pablo Couñago

Pablo Couñago, the scorer of that world, joined Ipswich Town from Celta English and became a site in England, but never quite close all expectations. He was also a couple of seasons on loan at Malaga. Now playing at Crystal Palace, the second English. Barkero two seasons ago gave a great performance by checking first with twelve goals Numancia, but barely had space in the Royal Society and in recent years has played mainly in the second division.

Among other members are Aganzo, the only one with Casillas, born in 81 while the other was 79, except for Xavi, 80. The former Real Madrid in the last minute replaced Gerard, through injury. Aganzo never quite convincing in the highest category, but it has made goals in the second. Now playing in the Lightning. Rubén Suárez has debuted in the first division this season with Levante. A few months ago, Fernando told us of his career. Álvaro Rubio, midfielder of the quarry of Zaragoza, has spent his career between Albacete and Valladolid, providing great performance for both clubs. For his part, Alex Lombardi was the only one who did not debut in first division. Now retired, played among others in Lugo, Alaves and Racing Athletic and affiliates.

It is not easy the way that youth football is far from the professional and there are many who fall by the way, arriving few and very few succeed. Not enough just to have the necessary quality, but possess sufficient competitiveness, personality and ability to adapt to the demands of world-class soccer, and a pinch of luck. In that group there were examples for all cases but with one thing in common: one day they were all world champions.
